Kelly Slivka

Kelly Slivka likes to talk about a lot of different stuff, not just science. But due to her university studies in ecology and evolutionary biology and her years working as a marine biologist, she probably is more qualified to discuss science than her other favorite topics: bad poetry, subway ethics, and innovative ice cream flavors. A newbie to New York City, Kelly's lived most of her life in Colorado running around out-of-doors and breathing mountain air. She can often be found staring wistfully out of a window, daydreaming about open fields.
Shows
Tumbleweed, Ladybugs, Urban Kayaking
_This is definitely one of the top five best shows. It starts with an amazing segment by Rose Eveleth about a world-class tumbleweed distributor. Next Jon Chang discusses a fungus that parasitizes ladybugs. Then Kelly Slivka wraps it up with a segment about kayaking to work in Manhattan.

Beer, Coffee, DNA
_Though this episode was food-themed at conception, it turned into more of a "drink" episode. Typical. First, Jon Chang asks some vendors at NovemBEER to talk to about their brews. Then Rose Evelyth and Colm Kelleher discuss a different kind of brew: coffee made from poo. Lastly, Kelly Slivka switches our gears to find out why DNA is called DNA.
